Caledon Hockely stepped out of the car, a superior smile on his face. Raising his head, he glanced up at the massive ship in front of him. It filled his vision, a grand spectacle that swallowed up the horizon and blocked out everything else around it. It was beautiful; the largest and most superior ship ever built. So many superlatives had been heaped upon the ship, and he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Titanic would make history. The largest, the fastest, the strongest, the grandest. Unsinkable, they called it. Just by being part of the ship's maiden voyage, Cal would become part of history. Remembered forever. Just the thought of it filled him with pride.
Another thing that filled him with pride was the beautiful jewel that had accompanied him. No, not the necklace he had purchased for his bride-to-be. It was the exquisite redhead who had been sitting beside him in the car. He took her hand and helped her out of the car, pausing for a moment to admire her aristocratic beauty. She was magnificent, and surely a credit to him. He couldn't wait to present her to his father.
"There it is, Rose," he said, waving his hand toward the Titanic in a grandiose gesture. "What do you think?"

Rose stepped out of the automobil, looking first to her fiance, and then turning her wide, green eyes to what many were calling The Ship of Dreams. It was large and had a commanding presence, but Rose wondered if someone wasn't compensating for something. Really, it just got to a point where these ships were so large that she couldn't tell the differences anymore.
She was biased, a bit, already having a deep seated disdain for the ship before she even saw it. It may as well have been a slave ship. It was taking her home... not to her home, but to Cal's, and she would be presented as his fiance. Her could blame her for being unenthused? It wasn't that she didn't like Cal. He was charming, kind to her, and often offered her the world. It didn't mean she wanted to be another treasure added to his collection of expensive things.
"I don't see what all the fuss is about," She said, unimpressed. "It doesn't look any bigger than the Mauritania." The Mauritania had been the world's largest, fastest, most luxurious ship... until the Titanic had been built. Which meant it was the ship they came on, landing in Liverpool weeks ago.

Cal smiled at her. One might almost say it was an affectionate smile. That was his Rose, always with her own opinions about things. He was sure she did it just to be contrary. There was her terrible taste in art, and there were all those books she read... once they were married, he was going to have to keep an eye on that.
"You can be blasé about some things, Rose, but not about Titanic. It's over a hundred feet longer than the Mauritania and far more luxurious," Cal said in a superior tone.
He took another moment to marvel at the sight in front of him before helping Ruth out of the car. "Your daughter is far too difficult to impress."

Definitely compensating for something, Rose was now positive. She let go of Cal's hand as he turned to help her mother out of the car, her eyes just briefly meeting Spicer's... Cal's lap dog. She truly loathed the man, and both Spicer and Cal knew it. She'd never tried to hide the fact.
Ruth had given Rose a disapproving look, but she doubted her daughter even saw it. Her cold and ever assessing eyes turned to the ship, and unlike Rose, Ruth was impressed. "So this is the ship they say is unsinkable."
Rose turned, nearly bumping into someone who was trying to get Cal's attention to ask what luggage to bring aboard, and she found that the people around her were far more interesting than the ship. She wondered if she had any time at all to go explore the port a little.

"Move along." Sarah said to the people carrying her luggage, "I don't have all day." She said with quite a disgusted look. She looked at her Husband who was sort of out of it. "Charles you look depressed." She walked over to him and forced herself to kiss him, god she hated having to pretend.
She saw her daughter Anna meandering away from them and she immediately became furious. "Andromeda Lucille Ashley." She shouted, "Get over here." Anna wouldn't listen and that was a 1st.
She saw her daughter run into a young woman and her boyfriend or husband, whoever the man was. Sarah ran over and looked at her daughter with a flair in her eyes. "Andromeda you do not run away from Mommy and Daddy." She scolded.

It was the first run in Rose would have with that little girl... the same girl that she would see a few more times. She could have been that girl when she was younger.
Rose was still looking around, and Cal seemed to be busy with her mother. She could probably sneak off, just as the child had done. That was, until the child ran into her, and attention was drawn to them.
She smiled at the girl's mother to let her know that there was no harm done, and then smiled. "Andromeda... that's a very lovely name." For propriety's sake, she looked back to the woman. "Mrs. Ashley... boarding the Titanic, if I may be so presumptious? I am Rose Dewitt Bukater, my mother, and Cal Hockley," she said, giving a quick round of introductions.

Anna looked up at the other woman Rose. She smiled and turned away running from her mother to her father. "Anna we've already discussed this." She said with a frown. Sarah rubbed her temples good lord that child gave her the worst headache. She turned to Rose and smiled.
"Ms Bukater it's a pleasure to meet you." She said with a smile. "You seem to know exactly who I am." she added most knew her because of her husband. "But I don't want to feel rude so I'll introduce myself again. I'm Mrs. Sarah Ashley." She said with a smile.

Rose smiled. "Well, to be honest, Mrs. Ashley, I just assumed when I heard you call your daughter's name. It's a pleasure to meet you as well."
The girl's full name had spilled angrily from the woman's lips, and Rose just put the pieces together.
The little girl had a charming smile, the kind of smile that would often mean she would turn heads when she was older.

"Aw yes I see." She said with a laugh. "If she ever bothers you on board just let me know and she will be punished." She quickly turned her head. "Anna dogs aren't toys!" She shouted and the young girl quickly backed away. "She's 4 and you know how terrible toddlers can be." She said with a raised brow. "She is a pain." She heard a crash from behind and turned yet again to see all of her luggage spill with Anna smiling. Sarah smiled sarcastically.
"Andromeda darling you can pick that up now." She said with the sweetest voice yet her daughter frowned and went to work. She saw her husband motion to start helping it wasn't what she wanted but she didn't stop him. "Sorry."

Cal, meanwhile, had turned to the woman's husband. "Mr. Ashley, I presume?" he said in an air of cool indifference. "I'm Caledon Hockley, from Pittsburgh. You have a lovely family, Mr. Ashley."
His arm curved possessively around Rose's waist. "Rose and I are to be married in Philadelphia next week, not long after the Titanic arrives in America," he announced.

"Congrats." Charles said with a smile. "Just make sure yours isn't strong minded like mine." He said with a laugh. He turned to Sarah who was flaring up a bit.
Finally she had everything under control with her daughter. Actually the little thing fell asleep in her arms. She flashed her head over to Charles. "And I see you had everything under control when she was playing with that dog." She said with an agitated look. She didn't love her husband and that was apparent.
"Pleasure Mr. Hockley." She said with a fake smile.

Cal's smile was equally fake. Charles Ashley was agreeable enough in his eyes, but the willfullness of the man's wife was all too apparent. And the child, though now calm, seemed to have inherited that quality from her mother. It made Cal wonder whether Rose, with her stubborn streak, would be as difficult to tame as Mrs. Ashley apparently was. Perhaps the red hair should have been a warning sign.
"Yes, it was good to meet you," Cal said, bowing his head politely. "I imagine we'll meet again on board the Titanic, and we'd be pleased to dine with you, should the occasion arise."
Reaching for Rose's hand again, he nodded toward the ship. "Come, my love, we must be getting on board. We wouldn't want to have any trouble getting on board too late, now would we?"

And there went the oppertunity to explore any part of Southampton. Rose sighed, but turned and gave Cal and agreeable enough smile.
"It was a pleasure, Mr. and Mrs. Ashley, and Andromeda," she said, her smile growing as she turned her attention to the little girl. Handful though she obviously was, Rose liked her. "And I do hope we have the oppertunity to dine together over the next few days."
She glanced behind her to see that their luggage was being taken care of, and then let Cal lead her towards the ship. It was a grand ship, she could admit that... she would have given anything, though, not to board it.
